It was date night this week, and that meant a trip to see the new romantic comedy “The Ugly Truth” starring Katherine Heigl, (best known for her performance in the movie “Knocked Up”) as a Sacramento television news producer and Gerard Butler (best known for his performance in “300”) as host of a local relationship based talk show called The Ugly Truth. Even though the theater was packed it was a nice respite from the heat to be in an air-conditioned theater and I was looking forward to a fun time. [more]
As an avid movie watcher (100-150+ movies a year in the theater) it is often the case that I find myself watching movies that others have missed. Movie industry programming what it is, small movies are often countered programmed against bigger and more mainstream movies in order to find that audience that is turned off by the next big blockbuster. My first encounter with the Coen brothers was Raising Arizona. I’ve come to expect the same off-beat, slightly twisted sense of humor with an element of transcendent nonsense that permeates their story lines–I like it. Burn After Reading is both off-beat and twisted, but it fails for me on several levels.

AS A HUSBAND AND A FATHER OF TWO LOVELY DAUGHTERS, there are times when I feel the need to sneak off at night and sit in front of my computer and download a movie from iTunes that’s full of action. The more explosions, chase scenes and shoot outs the better. [more]
