Tonight our Olympia Food Co-op will have their member forum at the Olympia Center in regards to their decision to boycott some Israeli products. For details see the events listing on our calendar. On their blog, the Co-op has been posting some ground rules that are worth reading, if you’re considering attending. Especially the prioritizing of members-first seating, which seems fair. One of the things that has surprised me moving to Olympia is the lack of information that is being publicized in our community.

If downtown has a special event or sidewalk sale, how you hear about it? Where would you go and get information on staying connected with what’s going on in your City?

We at einmaleins have been struggeling since we first opened our business with the idea that here in the small city publicity comes at the price of advertising. Keep Reading »

A couple of findings around the interweb on what’s going on with the Food Co-op boycott:

• An interesting comment in The Olympian’s comment section on yesterday’s article made me think of the comparison between one grocery store incident from a few years ago in the same town to another today. For me this broadens the scope of the argument at hand. I can appreciate this, especially in the light of what it can do to a community.

Security Building in Downtown OlympiaEach city has places that enthrall its visitors and persevere in their memories.  Among those in my memory is Triumphalnaya Square in Moscow, Russia.  The centerpiece of the square is a monument and statue to Vladimir Vladimirovich Mayakovksy (look around).  The photos in the link above remind me of my own  experience standing on the square.  Somewhat recognizable even in the depictions thousands of miles away, is a rare concentration of the urban experience–excitement, energy, vibrancy–and though less obvious, pride. Really? Was that neccesary?

Matt Batcheldor of The Olympian, quoted Rick Dougherty, project manager for the new City Hall in his article “Police targeted in fire at new City Hall“.

Is downtown really a rough neighborhood? Keep Reading »

Wow, I hope every Olympian and especially every City Council member reads this amazing piece in the Seattle Times about Bothell, WA’s plan for the future.
I took liberty to paste the most of the article below, but want to make sure full credit goes to Lance Dickie writing for the Seattle Times. (Bolding by me with a little explaination below, check the numbers!)

For all of the creative urban planning, cautious financing and bold leadership behind Bothell’s $150 million redevelopment vision, the most amazing feature might be the community support it enjoys. Keep Reading »

houses I want to live inI will continue to share my dream of what kind of house I want to live in. Hope I can turn it into reality someday. Here in Olympia, of course.

Last Sunday I took a great picture of an awesome townhouse/rowhouse project on Capitol Hill.

An interesting thought around this is: Keep Reading »

parking meters in downtown olympiaIn a surprise move the Olympia City Council made ALL parking in downtown free?!
Sure, first there was lots and lots of money spend, to the tune of $650,000 for the new meters, got them installed on the street and created a communication and outreach campaign for it. But who really worries about this, if flip-flopping is so easy and it’s not your money that was just wasted. Keep Reading »

This weekend, learn a new word!
Fußgängerzone. It’s German, as you might’ve guessed. And No, it doesn’t translate to Hope. It means pedestrian zone or street. Check Wikipedia for more on that.

But it means hope! Keep Reading »

The Olympian reports today on the state of the Lake and gives us an update on what is happening with CLAMP and the work that’s been done to determine the future of this part of downtown.

Budgets are tight right now at the State and so its no surprise that words are many on why the dice fall the way they do. But it is sad to see the Lake, which is under managment of the Washington State Department of General Administration is in such bad shape. It hasn’t been dredged for years and there is no real plan on what to do next. Keep Reading »
