The previously announced rate increases at Olympia’s 3- and 9-hour parking meters go into effect Tuesday, September 7, 2010. In February 2009, a survey was taken at the well which really helped to give real numbers to the usage of the well by the public. At the time, it was estimated that 250 people per day were coming to use the water from the well. The survey information proved very useful in the process of the City of Olympia making it’s decision to purchase the Diamond parking lot and making the well permanently available. Keep Reading »

The arson that occurred on July 8, 2010, caused extensive smoke and soot damage, particularly on the first and second floors of the New City Hall. Because the building was under construction, smoke and soot entered open utility chases, elevator shafts and stairwells. Unfortunately, at the time of the arson, most of the drywall and concrete floors had yet to be sealed. Although the full extent of the damage and required remediation is still being assessed, the City currently estimates that repairs may be as high as $2.5 to $3 million, the majority of which is covered by insurance. The Thurston County Steering Committee of the Combined Fund Drive, teaming with the Volunteer Center of Lewis, Mason, and Thurston Counties, is organizing a Day of Service cleanup event in downtown Olympia on August 6. LOTT’s new Water Education and Technology (WET) Center opens its doors in August. The WET Center provides a fun, hands-on opportunity for people of all ages to learn about water, where it comes from, and how we use it, clean it, and recycle it.
