The City has given me the green light on closing off the intersection at Washington and 5th for a block party on Saturday, October 31 at 9:30 p.m. We will be hosting the Michael Jackson Thriller dancers, they do a wonderful reenactment of the popular 1984 “Thriller” video. Matter Gallery opened September 24 in downtown Olympia at 113 Fifth Avenue SW, between Capitol and Columbia. The new gallery features works by 60 artists using reclaimed and responsibly harvested materials. Works include wall art, sculpture, furniture, lamps, clocks, garden adornments, and jewelry. [more]

Artspace is considering Olympia for an affordable artists’ live/work space project. City of Olympia and the Olympia Arts Commission are preparing for a visit from Artspace on Sept. 16 and 17, when the organization will assess whether Olympia is a good match for a future Artspace project. [more]
The Olympia Lacey Tumwater Visitor & Convention Bureau (VCB) announced today it will re-open the Capitol Campus Visitor Center later this summer with grand reopening ceremonies scheduled for September 9. The facility, operated by the State’s Department of General Administration (GA) since 1986, closed on July 1, 2009 due to budget reductions. It is estimated that about 50,000 people used the center annually. Following discussions with GA, a lease arrangement was agreed upon that will keep the VCB in the Visitor Center through June 2012.
