The making of a citizen-activist Born and raised in the Olympia area, Joe Hyer graduated from Tumwater High School in 1991. He then undertook a two year academic program on International Politics at The George Washington University in Washington DC. In 1994, he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature at the Pacific University in Oregon. In 1995, Joe founded The Alpine Experience, a retail store dedicated to quality outdoor sports equipment ranging from mountain hiking to kayaking. The company moved to its current location in downtown Olympia in 2000, renovating and occupying the old Hyak Lumber Building on Olympia Avenue. In 2004, he opened a sister company, the Warehouse Rock Gym, a full-scale indoor climbing facility. In 2008 he expanded his downtown business operations to include Olympic Outfitters and The Bike Stand. In August of 2004, Joe was appointed by the Olympia City Council to Position 7, and with 82% voter approval, voters elected him to a full four-year term in 2005. Joe currently enjoys sports in general, climbing, backpacking, skiing, traveling, community service, and reading and writing. He is building an extensive rare book collection, and enjoying the walkability of living and working in downtown Olympia.  In addition, Joe has served the community in the following ways: He has been a member of Olympia Mountaineers for 19 years, serving as Climbing Chair, Treasurer, First Aid Chair, and Conservation Chair Joe is an active Board member of the Outdoor Industry Association, a national trade association, and served on the 2004-09 Capitol Summit team in Washington DC. Past board member and President of the Olympia Downtown Association Treasurer, Thurston County Democrats 12 years advisor and speaker for Washington Business Week, fostering business education opportunities to Washington youth Member, Washington State Solid Waste Advisory Committee Past Chair, Thurston County Solid Waste Advisory Committee Past board member, Thurston County Economic Development Council Former board member, Visitor and Convention Bureau 3 years on the Bridge Marketing Team, City of Olympia Gateway Corridor Project Current Advisory Board Member, Capitol Land Trust 2004 Co-Chair, Olympians for a Livable Community, campaign to fund city Parks and Sidewalks Plans Member, Capitol Lake Adaptive Management Plan Steering Committee Member, Thurston County EMS Council Current Chair, Olympia City Council Finance Committee, and Committee of the Chairs Past Chair, Olympia City Council General Government Committee Past Member, Olympia City Council Land Use and Environment Committee
