Hyer steps down from Mayor Pro Tem

Joe Hyer steps down as Mayor Pro Tem!

We are made aware of this news earlier today and just took some time to dig through the video files of this week’s Council meeting.

At the 30 min mark of the Intergovernmental Assignments / Council Committee Chairs part of the meeting Hyer reports on attending a meeting in place of May Mah and after his report he takes a moment to reflect on the last years and ask the council to allow him to step down and vote for a replacement for him.

In Hyer’s words:

“… five years on this council has been a tremendous toll emotionally, physically and mentally for me … as well as running a business… 80 hour work weeks, pile up and pile up, and pile up. And you find that it has a toll on you… to that end I am going to be trying to be much more careful moving forward in key of housing inititives that I am passionate about but doing much less responsibilities overall both in my business and on the council in order to have the time to sit down and read a book perhaps sit down and converse with you all about those books and things of that nature and to that end I would like to request this council permission that i can step aside as Mayor Pro Tem effective next Tuesday. And the Mayor can schedule an election for a new Mayor Pro Tem. I think that my skills are better utilized on housing initiatives on the council and I’ve been thinking about this for a couple of months now in fact and I think it’s time to transition to some new energy in that area. So I can focus on some environmental stuff and the budget and the economic issues moving forward.

Mayor Mah concluded by announcing a schedule change for next council meeting including a vote for a new Mayor Pro Tem.

This step will open up the Mayor Pro Tem position. Who do you think should be nominated to this position?

Check back for the continuing story…

Hate to brag but I got it half right. Or half wrong. :)

Funny, he doesn't mention the time it's going to take to combat the three felony counts of drug dealing...

To answer Mathias' question Steve Buxbaum or Craig Ottevelli
  • Would make most sense, right.

Joan Machlis!!!!! I so wish, it is sad that we lost her, she is a brilliant and inspiring leader, who had a good understanding of what we need to be doing here in Olympia. We lost a great opportunity for leadership in our community this last election.

I like Joan and think she is a very smart and good-hearted person, but we did not "lose a great opportunity for leadership" at all. Instead, we, the voters, said we didn't want leadership that was taking us in the direction Joan was taking us, and decided to replace her with different leadership that would take us in a different direction.

While I don't think you meant anything malicious, it comes across as both undemocratic and insulting to suggest that Joan (or any elected official) knows "what we need to be doing here in Olympia" better than the voters do.
  • Yeah, this dream is over, unfortuantely!
