Quattrocelli3Thanks to Dan Weiss, I was lucky enough to get a ticket to ‘Dinner & Music’ on Sunday to see the German cellists, Quattrocelli play! Water Street Cafe treated us to a fancy four course dinner, and the band entertained us in between. Quattrocelli is a group of musicians who are far more than their bow ties let on. Their stage presence, their antics; I was anxious to see what they were going to do next. They played theme songs from movies like ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Mission Impossible’, and classic tunes like their Gershwin medley. Thank you to the band for making us laugh and relax. You are unique and admired!
‘Dinner and Music’ was an Inspiration Institute event, sponsored by einmaleins, and loved by Olympians. It was also my first experience with “formal dining”. Water Street Cafe made the evening grand with their intimate cabaret style four course meal… Their sorbet was amazing… How could you not love it?

Quattrocelli had props to help them with their songs. When they played the theme from The Godfather, two of the band members carried a cello case onto the stage on their shoulders as if it were a coffin, set it down, and tossed roses at it before hugging each other. Another song had them in cowboy hats, one man using his cello as a gun, knocking his friend off his chair. One man turned himself into a slide trombone for a song!

I loved the musical selection. Beautiful music, all of it, but it was the perfect blend of seriousness, talent, and fun. Hitchcock’s Psycho, 007, and the Pink Panther theme songs forced you to crack a smile…. and they aced ‘Miserlou’, a song I’ve been trying to play well for a long time.

I’m really glad I was able to go to this amazing event. Thank you again to everyone involved, and especially to Quattrocelli for coming to the States and creating an evening that my family will always remember.

  • I had a chance to preview Quattrocelli on YouTube, so I had an idea of what to expect last Sunday. My wife wasn't sure what I was all excited about, and I suspect she was anticipating boring (yet quality) classical music. It was a sheer delight to see her eyes light up at the first selection of songs. The cellist were more than masters of their instruments; they brought familiar music to a new level. It made me wish I had kept playing the cello beyond the seventh grade. They made it look so easy. And the played their instruments with versatility. Bowing and plucking are standard, but strumming? as a beat box? Quattrocelli was full of surprises.

Of course the evening was all the more special because of the venue. Approximately 30 people shared dinner practically within arms reach of the entertainers. My wife and I came away feeling honored to be permitted to sit and listen in such an intimate proximity to the musicians. I have a distinct memory of smiling--almost grinning--with delight through the entire performance.

Oh, and the food was awesome. The perfect compliment to the quality of music. If you haven't been to Waterstreet Cafe (and this was our first time) I suggest you make your reservations today!
