The Washington State Historical Society and State Capital Museum presents: Movies at the Mansion. Tonight, Friday, August 14th come see ’Arsenic and Old Lace’ sponsored by the Sacajawea Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. On Friday, August 21st, ‘Cool Hand Luke’ will be playing. A fun opportunity to get out, lounge in the grass, and watch some of the classics with family and friends, ‘Movies at the Mansion’ is an event that any crowd can enjoy.

Starring Cary Grant as mild-mannered drama critic Mortimer Brewster, who learns his two kindly, lovable aunts have been poisoning people with elderberry wine. Two murderers move into the old house with the idea of adding a few corpses of their own. One critic writes that Arsenic and Old Lace explores the challenges of family life, especially when your family happens to be insane. A hilarious farce with Cary Grant at his best, most befuddled self, directed by Frank Capra and released in 1944.

This film presentation is sponsored by Olympia’s chapter of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution, who have created a small display on the history of their chapter in the museum for pre-movie viewing. A founding member of the chapter was Elizabeth Lord, of the Lord family, who built the museum mansion and lived in it until 1939. Chapter members felt it was right to contribute their support to a museum project that tickled their fancy and featured characters representing proper-if comically eccentric-ladies of the early 20th century. The museum and the DAR have collaborated on an exhibit during the chapter’s centennial year in 2005-2006, partnered on events and programs, including this film presentation.

The movie begins promptly at 9 PM preceded by a special introduction placing the film in historic context. Museum doors open at 8:00, and refreshments, popcorn, and drinks are available for purchase. Complimentary coffee provided by Batdorf and Bronson Coffee Roasters.

Bring your chairs and blankets and settle in for an evening of outdoor, vintage cinema, courtesy of the State Capital Museum, part of the Washington State Historical Society.

Suggested donation of $2 is appreciated.
