So last week we bbq’ed. We’ve done that a whole lot since the first rays of spring hit our deck out back. Never thought that I would get some much into bbq’ing, but after the long week in front of the computer firing up the grill with my 4 year old next to me is as close to perfection as it gets… oh, wait, turning on the Sounders Game on a Saturday is. And a glass of wine or a cold beer and the wife and the little girl… well, you get the picture. I love my family and I love food.
Now there are different types of food lovers out there. Some go into the direction of very fine dining and need a lobster on the grill. Some like it cheap and dirty, the greasier the burger the trashier the fries the better, Dicks anyone??
Now I do love a greasy burger every now and then and certainly don’t shy away from a lobster, but what makes me smile the most is when you can elevate comfort food to a new level of greatness. A burger with a special chutney or artesian relish, pretzels made at home. My wifes currys or chillis. Food can be simple, made with love and care, with thoughtful and playful ingredients elevated to a level of surprise or one that honors the authenticity of the original.
That’s me, that’s my kind of food.
So, this brings me dinner a couple of days ago. We bbq’ed as I already mentioned. We didn’t go fancy. We grilled up some bratwursts and some Bockwursts. Trixy made some killer over fries and we had a delicious salad made of lettuce from our CSA share from Kirsop Farm. But, since I am a man, I need to talk about and sing praises to the meat. A Bratwurst we know what it is, a Bockwurst, or what they call Bockwurst over here, is the white sausage, not filled with all the weird stuff you can find on your kitchen floor. Just plain white sausage. Chicken probably, or pork. This glorious and versatile member of the sausage family is great for your typical Bavarian breakfast: White Sausage, sweet mustard, pretzel and a Lager beer. But, my dear readers, we grilled it! And! It called for, begged me to turn it into a Currywurst.
Now, I won’t go into the proper pronounciation of this glorious, humble treat. It’s origin is obviously from Germany – where all great sausages come from. Usually a cheap street food this fantastic treat can be found at many street corners around the country. Transit stations, soccer stadiums. Beats a hot dog any day.
But let me just tell you how you too can have the fantastic experience of a Currywurst at home at your own house. As I already mentioned, the sausage is important. No regular soupy-tasting, overly processed $0.99 dog will do. Get a good Bockwurst. Grill it, panfry it, heat it up and brown it nicely. I score it before heating, cause I like how that looks when it’s done. Next in a ramekin or any other small vessel combine a generous amount of ketchup with curry powder. Stir, and taste. Now drown, yes I mean drown the grilled sausage in the sausage. This is no dipping affair, you want to covered good. Eat it with fries, a good roll or pair it with another one, side by side!
Now? Enjoy, there’s nothing left to do. Oh, and repeat, a couple of times at least. It’s that good!
